Meet Chemical Engineering Senior Hamidu Barrie

“Work smart, not hard!” – Hamidu Barrie 

After earning his BS in chemical engineering this May, senior Hamidu Barrie will begin working towards his  master’s in chemical engineering in the fall. He has gained considerable hands-on experience and knowledge through three internships, including manufacturing process improvement skills as part of his ongoing manufacturing technology co-op at DuPont. He has also enjoyed being a member of the ChemE-Car battery team.  

Why Rutgers? 

I’m an in-state student and chose Rutgers because of its reputation and the high job placement rate for graduates. 

What drew you to chemical engineering? 

Both my parents work in the chemistry field, so I grew up hearing about their workdays. With chemical engineering, I saw that there is a wide selection of branches to specialize in. 

Do you have a favorite class? 

My favorite class was Process Simulation Control. One of my internship’s involved using PID feedback loops, which I learned about in that class. 

Have you had any internships? 

Yes, I’ve had three internships. Two of them were in product development at Colgate-Palmolive and Bristol Myers Squibb. The third was a manufacturing technology co-op at DuPont. 

What about research projects? 

I have worked under Aziz Ezzat, an assistant professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering using a 3D printer. I also worked in the civil engineering department on a project involving slip critical connections. Both experiences helped sharpen my skills to become a well-rounded engineer. 

What are your plans for the future? 

To earn my master’s and start working as a process control engineer. 

What will you miss most about Rutgers Engineering? 

I will miss the freedom from responsibility and the college town atmosphere. 

What is your favorite memory from your time at SoE? 

My favorite memories are of times spent collaborating with my peers. 

What would you tell future students? 

Work smart, not hard! Don’t compare yourself to other students too much. 

What three words best describe your SoE experience? 

Challenging. Fun. Creative.
