There are several types of electives: Humanities/Social Sciences, Technical, Departmental, and General. Each elective type has its own focus.
Humanities/Social Science (H/SS) electives are generally non-technical courses. Every Engineering student must take 6 of these courses (or 18 credits)
Free electives must be selected in a manner such that:
At least two courses are at the 300/400 (upper) level;
At least two courses, including one upper level, are from the same
subject area;
At least two different subjects are represented. All courses may be from the same subject only if a minor is earned in that subject. Two upper level courses from the list must still be taken.
Example 1: 355:101 220:200 220:301 940:326 830:101 700:101
Acceptable: Two subjects are represented; two are from the same area (220:200 and 220:301);
2 upper level courses (220:301 and 940:326).
Example 2: 355:101 220:200 220:202 220:301 220:308 220:395
Acceptable: Only one subject is represented, this student is planning a minor in economics;
2 upper level courses;
Example 3: 355:101 220:200 920:101 920:102 920:326 830:101
NOT acceptable: 2 upper level courses have NOT been taken.
Example 4: 355:101 220:200 420:131 420:332 420:413 830:101
Acceptable: 2 upper levels represented; Two subjects are represented;
two are from the same area (420 courses);
Example 5: 355:101 220:200 920:101 830:101 730:307 508:360
NOT Acceptable: no link between 1 upper level and another course;

Acceptable Humanities/Social Science Electives List
A Technical Elective is math or science related course. Each department within Engineering has a specific list of technical electives. Engineering students have to take 2-3 technical electives depending on the major. See your department for a list of acceptable courses.
A Departmental Elective is a course specific to your major. The number of required departmental electives is also specific to your major. See your department for details.
A general elective is almost any course offered in the university with few exceptions. Most Engineering majors require only 3 credits to fulfill the general elective requirements, except for the Chemical option in Chemical Engineering (6 credits) and Applied Sciences in Engineering (9 credits).
