All packages from other carriers, UPS, FedEx, Airborne, DHL etc are delivered to the loading dock usually in the morning. The packages are logged in the log book and delivered to departments, along with the mail in the afternoon. Packages may be picked up at the loading dock for those who do not want to wait for delivery. It is extremely important when placing an order to have the vendor put the name of the individual, their department and PO# on the shipping label. Packages without a name can be looked up on RIAS as long as there is a PO # on the label. This can delay delivery of the package.
The loading dock should be notified in advance when a large shipment is to arrive. Large shipments consists usually lab equipment (refrigerators, optical tables, machinery) brought in by freight carriers. For equipment that is crated or delivered on a pallet and is too large for the mailroom to deliver, the requester should make prior arrangements with an outside rigger to come and deliver and set up the equipment in their lab if they are unable to do it themselves. The mailroom does not have the man power or resources to deliver such items, nor does it have the room to store these items once they are delivered.
Sending packages using special carriers (UPS, FedEx): If you are sending back a package to a vendor, call the vendor and see if they will pick up the expense. If it is a defective part or wrong item, they will call the carrier of their choice and schedule the pick up. If this is the case, bring the package to the loading dock for pick up.
