Rutgers civil and environmental engineering professors are working together with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on research to improve understanding of air pollution that will lead to updated chemical profiles for vehicles and to the development of methods and the characterization of primary and secondary particulate matter emissions affecting air quality?

Thank your for your interest in graduate study at Rutgers School of Engineering, where we regard our graduate students as our partners in research, instruction and outreach:
Our research partnership is facilitated
through the over $40M research funding and over 200 research projects,
with our graduate students and faculty working side by side.
Our teaching partnership is made possible by teaching
assistant appointments, where our graduate students work with our
faculty in teaching our lab and recitation sections.
Our outreach partnership combines the energies of our
faculty and graduate students in serving the public, assisting high
school and college students, publicizing our programs, and helping the
needy.
Our over 800 graduate students come from all around the U.S. and the world. The majority of our graduate students are full-time students. We also have a sizable number of part-time students who come to us from local and nearby industry and government. We have a strong placement record; our graduates easily find prestigious positions in industry, government and academia. Our graduates are confident of their abilities, they perform to their full potential, and they are equipped with the skills to succeed in a rapidly-changing world.
Our 130 faculty members in residence are active in research on a broad range of topics, from the fundamental to the applied, serving the needs of our state, country and world. Our faculty members publish extensively and they are frequently invited worldwide to give seminars and keynote speeches. You will have lots of choice in selecting an advisor and a research topic that is of interest to you.
We offer seven Ph.D. programs, seven M.S. programs, and two M.Eng. programs. We also have a Professional Science Masters program that offers a Master of Business and Science degree. The degrees we offer are described in the Degrees Offered page. Please also look at our Overview page. We also have an off-campus graduate program in Materials Science offered at Picatinny Arsenal in Dover, N.J. In addition, it is possible to pursue non-degree study in all of our graduate programs.
Why Should You Choose Rutgers?
There are many excellent colleges of engineering in the nation. Some facts about our program that may be helpful in making your decision are:
- The University. Rutgers is one of sixty-three institutions that are members of the prestigious AAU (American Association of Universities). Rutgers University has one of the best faculty cores in the U.S. The annual research expenditures at Rutgers are over $400 million. Rutgers excels in all areas, from the liberal arts to the sciences, from the humanities to engineering.
- The School of Engineering. We have a nationally ranked program that offers graduate degrees in biomedical engineering; chemical engineering; civil and environmental engineering; electrical and computer engineering; industrial engineering; materials science and engineering, and mechanical and aerospace engineering. Rutgers SoE provides a large variety of topics of research without being a huge school where one could get lost. We have extensive labs.
- The Faculty. SoE faculty is outstanding -- on average, every year, two or more of our faculty members receive the NSF CAREER Awards. Our faculty continuously receive awards and fellowships from the most prestigious professional organizations. Books written by our faculty are used world-wide. Our full-time faculty members, as well as our adjunct faculty, are national and international experts in a broad range of fields. Our faculty is also affiliated with several research centers and organizations both inside as well as outside Rutgers.
- The Friendly, Collegial Atmosphere. While our standards are high and admission is competitive, ours is a "student-friendly" school, where faculty strive to educate students through research and courses, and to boost the development of students' careers through personal mentoring, group feedback environments, and opportunities for honing and marketing student skills. If you are an ambitious student who thrives in a supportive environment, you should seriously consider Rutgers School of Engineering.
- The Location. Our central location is extremely desirable for several reasons:
- The cultural and social opportunities of New Brunswick, as well as of New York City (35 mi), Philadelphia (60 mi), Princeton (20 mi) and Newark (25 mi) are unsurpassed.
- Rutgers is in the middle of the greatest concentration of industrial and government research laboratories in the U.S. (considering New Jersey, New York, Philadelphia, Boston, and Washington D.C.). This increases opportunities for professional contact, as well as employment prospects.
- Rutgers is located in a very diverse area, where almost every ethnic, cultural, and religious group in the country has a strong representation. The diversity of our area is our strength, making it possible for students from all parts of the U.S. and the world feel at home from your first day here.
By selecting Rutgers as your home for graduate study you will be coming to a strong university with exceptional academic programs, in engineering as well as in the arts and sciences. You will come to a place that is safe and enjoyable, where you will have excellent opportunities for growth and for employment upon graduation.
